Sales reps from all industries and walks of life often ask me: “How do I become really great at sales?” I believe that sales is simply results-driven communication, so my answer is always: become a better communicator.
Learning from others, books, articles, workshops—you name it, they're all important. There’s a reason some of the world’s most successful people are avid readers. Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, and Warren Buffett are all frequent page turners.
But the real road to mastery is self-study. Studying yourself is where you’re going to learn the most. It’s also the scariest place to go and study. But if you really want to kill it in sales—start here.

Here’s my 30-day self-study challenge.
- Record yourself
Commit to recording one pitch per day. If you're using our inside sales platform, you can easily set it up to have all your calls recorded and archived automatically, so that you can find and share them whenever you need. Record yourself using video even if you’re selling on the phone and your prospect can’t see you. Your body language will give you a lot of clues as to what you’re going to say next and how you’re going to deliver your lines before you even open your mouth.
The more aware you become of your own body language, the more control you will have over how you deliver your pitch.
- Transcribe your recordings
Take it to the next level by transcribing your recordings. This will allow you to fully immerse yourself in your own communication.
An alternative to transcribing your recordings is to listen to or watch your recording at the end of each day and write down notes.
Take Tony Robbins for example, one of the most effective communicators in the world. He’s on the road 300 days of the year and talks in front of tens of thousands of people.
Every night after his workshop, he has a full transcript of his talk. Not just audio and video, but a full written digital and physical copy for him to go through and study, edit and work on in order to improve.
So if you think your 15-minute call is too much to transcribe, think again.
Read, edit and highlight weaknesses and areas where you think you did really well. As you go through it, a world of opportunities for improvement will open up.
- Share your material with others
Share your recordings with mentors, coaches and trusted communicators and ask them for feedback. They will provide you with more analytical and less emotional feedback, which is often what we need and what helps us improve.
If you don’t have a mentor or coach, ask someone whose opinions you value to provide you with an objective point of view and give you feedback.
- Create a communication inventory
Create an inventory of your journey toward better communication. Create a “Best of” and “Worst of” folder for all your recordings. Once a quarter, go back and take a look at these and compare old recordings to new ones.
Over time, you’ll see the impact of your self-study and your progression as you listen to these.
